Sasolburg, the birth place of the petrochemical industry in South Africa, was proclaimed a town on 8 September 1954. The town is easily accessible from Johannesburg and the East Rand via the N1 or the R59. It lies 80km to the south of Johannesburg on the N1 and is only 150km away from the OR Tambo International Airport.

In order to provide housing and facilities for its employees, Sasol, hired the town planning services of a Swiss-born town planner, Max Kirchhofer. He had a philosophy of tranquil and aesthetically pleasing organic design. Despite being an industrial town, Sasolburg boasts excellent facilities that host national sport events and annual science and technology exhibitions, while the award winning theatre is regularly graced by the outstanding performers.
